Harley Davidson to expand testing
Motorcycle company revving up Yucca site

Harley Davidson Inc. is expanding its testing in Yucca, about 40 miles northeast of Lake Havasu City, according to Mike Palese, a Chrysler LLC spokesman.

Chrysler, which owns the 3,650-acre Arizona Proving Ground, started leasing its facility to the motorcycle manufacturer in October 2008, according to a Chrysler Web site. That agreement, which took effect July 1, allowed Harley Davidson Inc. to use three buildings and test tracks, the Chrysler Web site stated.

Several calls to Harley Davidson Inc. officials were not returned Thursday afternoon.

Palese said the company will be “using more of the facility for a longer period of time.”

He said the specifics of the agreement were confidential and had to come from Harley Davidson.

“They are a good tenant,” he said. “They are a great company. There is a lot our companies share and it’s a big facility. It’s a first-class facility and we don’t use it all.”

The Associated Press reported earlier this week that Harley Davidson Inc. announced that it was going to consolidate three test facilities — one in Talladega, Ala., one in Naples, Fla., and one in Mesa — into the Yucca facility.

Chrysler purchased the proving ground from Ford Motor Company in 2007, according to a Chrysler Web site.

Palese said he was not “at liberty to discuss” if Chrysler was in further talks with other companies for testing at the Yucca location.

“I don’t know if we have any plans to talk with anybody else,” he said.
