Drivers taken to hospital after mid-morning wreck
Complications from a man’s medical condition caused a two-vehicle collision at 9:39 a.m. Thursday at the intersection of Mesquite and South Smoketree avenues. The wreck resulted in both drivers being transported to the hospital by River Medical ambulance service.
William Raper, 54, of Lake Havasu City, was traveling westbound in his gray 2005 Chevy pickup on Mesquite Avenue when he “swerved and missed a vehicle in front of him, continued on (through the four-way stop intersection) and plowed into a vehicle stopped in the (eastbound) lane closest to the stop sign,” said Senior Officer Clint Wilcox of Lake Havasu City Police Department. Shirley Strong, 62, of Havasu Heights, was stopped at the intersection in her white 2002 Dodge Dakota pickup when she was struck. She was transported to Havasu Regional Medical Center to be treated for minor injuries. The department’s Sgt. Keith Huskisson, also on scene, said the accident was possibly linked to a medical emergency or condition. “Witnesses say he was slumped over when it happened,” Huskisson said. Lake Havasu City Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Quijada responded along with Engine No. 5 and Truck No. 1. Four police patrol units responded to provide traffic control and initiate accident investigations. Two River Medical ambulances were required on scene to accommodate the injured drivers. Steve’s Automotive & Towing arrived later on scene to tow the vehicles from the intersection. Senior Officer Wilcox said the nature of Raper’s medical condition was still unconfirmed Thursday afternoon. You may contact the reporter at jhanson@havasunews.com. Article Rating

" Just a question wrote on Nov 12, 2009 11:10 AM: " Are not most cases involving the police and the public going to be a "he said she said" situation? I would think that as bad as the police are here they would at least be sure to make sure its a he said she said where the cop on the bench gets to rule on credibility. That seems to be the problem. The only case I have heard is not a he said she said is the one where the cop-judge ruled a video out of evidence that proved the defendents story. " Desertrat wrote on Nov 12, 2009 10:44 AM: " Exactly r2sweet - let's remember what this article is about -a terrible accident. Talk about 'small minded' - making every issue in town about your own hidden agenda (anti-LHC) Kinda sad really. " JM wrote on Nov 11, 2009 11:54 PM: " I'm glad to see our comments really got not-so-brightone's goat. It has provided me with some much needed laughter. Violating tourists rights??? How about an example, just one example that doesn't include he said she said..... " northbound wrote on Nov 11, 2009 11:24 PM: " Oh good grieff bad cops? who the ones that give our tourists tickets? You whiners crack me up if I was to go to Daytona Beach and got a speeding ticket am I gonna cry bad cops? NO I'm gonna suck it up an either go to traffic school or pay a fine. If I'm on a lake or out in the ocean and get pulled over am I gonna cry bad cop? Nope guess I did something stupid to get pulled over. Those of you that say only Havasu PD is over zealous funny thing happened when I went to Kingman a couple weeks ago for jury duty on a case from Bullhead, the defense attorney just a pup out of law school said, "this is a case of an over zealous police department." Must be a standard lable for any police department that arrests or tickets people now a days. Guess I'll go to NYC and check out thier over zealous police officers. So many of you seem to know how a police department should be run but WHY are you not working for it or running it? " o'really wrote on Nov 11, 2009 11:18 PM: " Mouse, a cop in the channel writing tickets for made up crimes to fill a courtrooms coffers instead of on the street preventing accidents or being out there protecting the citizens, which is not profitable, is too much to expect small minds to comprehend. " Desertrat wrote on Nov 11, 2009 10:27 AM: " mouse - a traffic accident is related to tourism? Yeah. Okay. Yawn. " brightone wrote on Nov 11, 2009 10:11 AM: " O'really wrote on Nov 6, 2009 6:32 PM: " First, I hope that everyone in accident is ok. Secondly, if the police were protecting the citizens instead of looking to fill the courts with tourists maybe it would not have happened. " Man, glad to see he got some people's goat with that comment. Seems those who expended the energies going back at Really, are as lame as his comment. Keep it up though, it provides me with much needed laughter. Oh, and DesertRat. You disappointment me, not using the word 'bash' in your post. My Condolences to those involved in the accident. BEERS! " DesertMouse wrote on Nov 10, 2009 11:21 PM: " What was your comment Rat? I could not hear it over the sound of the LHCPD violating tourist rights while the accidents are happening on our city streets. Keep up the noise O'Really. The more people are aware how everything is tied to bad cops, bad courts and bad council policy the more it is apt to change. " Desertrat wrote on Nov 10, 2009 9:32 AM: " Really? Yeah, the PD can now predict medical emergencies from individual drivers. Man, they really are ALL POWERFUL. lol Once again, posting your own agenda under every article. YAWN " northbound wrote on Nov 9, 2009 8:58 AM: " Havasurights & JM: Thank you for standing up for what should be, and what is right. Most of these know it all whiney people have not a clue what is sent to anyone in a vehicle accident. They don't work for law enforcement, fire, ems or 911 so of course they don't know. You just never know what can happen at any given time just ahead of you. MN even a 16 year old can have medical problems which can cause a car accident. Many people are diabetic and can go into diabetic shock even while driving down the road. O'really grow up get a life, there isn't a cop on every street or at every intersection accidents happen. Stop bagging on the very people YOU may need to call for help some day. I myself had almost hit another vehicle twice in the last week a vehicle pulled out in front of me driving nb on sr95 at orogrande the other drivers turned right on their red light and doing 55 mph if I didn't hit my breaks I would of slamed into them, it's called defensive driving not looking for a cop to cite the ones that don't know how to drive. " tntareinlove2000 wrote on Nov 7, 2009 7:55 PM: " Hope that all is OK. It is to bad that something like this had to happen. " JM wrote on Nov 6, 2009 8:41 PM: " To answer your question havasurights, it's because some people are just plain miserable with their lives and have nothing better to do than ""stir the pot"". If you were to put BonBon Rich in the drivers seat of one of the cars in the accident his post would read more like....... "only 2 fire trucks and 4 cop cars? I could have been severely injured and there wouldn't have been enough emergency personnel to pay attention to me""....... Or something along those lines...... " O'really wrote on Nov 6, 2009 6:32 PM: " First, I hope that everyone in accident is ok. Secondly, if the police were protecting the citizens instead of looking to fill the courts with tourists maybe it would not have happened. " havasurights wrote on Nov 6, 2009 5:08 PM: " To BonHomme Richard, two fire trucks, one an engine just in case of a vehicle fire. Sometimes in vehicle accidents there is fire (fluid leads-gas and sparks from severed wires). The other, a truck company, for extrication tools (Jaws of Life) sometimes victims need to be cut out of their vehicles. Plus the personnel required for C-Spine precautions (C-collar and backboard). There are numerous functions that all fire personnel perform, manning the fire hose, working the pump panel on the engine, taking the report of patients names, assisting the ambulance crew with other needs and manpower. And while the fire crews are at a scene, it does not always mean that they are NOT available to take another call that comes in. They could be available at scene. As for 4 police officers…Traffic control and scene management. Maybe some of you people that bag on the firefighters should visit a station once in a while and find out what exactly do they do. Why is it that some seem to think that because there is a lot of equipment at an accident scene that it is a waste of the publics money………UNINFORMED!!! "
