Wedemeyer not seeking 2nd term

Eight residents have already pulled packets for City Council but current city councilman Brian Wedemeyer says he is not pulling one.

Mayor Mark Nexsen, Council members Margaret Nyberg and Dave McAtlin as well as residents Sonny Borrelli, Jeni Coke, Mark Dutton, Andrew Nezo, William Lundy and Shawna Thornton have also taken out packets for the Aug. 24 election, according to city officials. Nexsen, McAtlin, Nyberg and Wedemeyer’s terms expire this year. Wedemeyer said he would not run for reelection because he would like to spend more time with family.

“My son’s going to be 4 soon and it’s time to get him ready for T-ball practice, Wedemeyer said. “My daughters are going to be quickly approaching their teenage years, and I know they’re going to have needs as well and I would like to be around more for them.”

Wedemeyer said he is looking forward work ahead and finishing out his term.

“I still have several months left and there’s still work to be done,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what the committee from the (council) retreat comes up with to bring jobs to the community. There are also several other things, like the budget, that I’m looking forward to getting to work on.”

Wedemeyer is currently the youngest council member and said he was encouraged to see a variety of names already pulling packets.

“That’s a good sign for sure. … Last time, the voters certainly didn’t have a lot of choices in terms of variety so it’s nice to see a lot of names already,” he said. “I think it’s always good when you have a governing body, like a City Council, represent the entire community. I did see there are some younger people that are considering a run for one of those seats but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are the best candidates. I believe voters will have a great opportunity to select the right candidates and they should.”

Nyberg said there were too many items that were important to the city for her to not submit for reelection.

“I’m interested in keeping sewer rates down, keeping the senior center open and funding the meals on wheels program, among other things,” she said. “I also am concerned with our daily objective of bringing people into the town. There are so many projects that are going to help these things and we’re right in the middle of some of those things and I want to see them through to the end or at least see them get started.”

Prospective candidates are required to obtain no fewer than 748 signatures and no more than 1,495 signatures and other required documentation for their names to appear on the ballot. Residents may not file petitions earlier than April 26 or later than May 26.

Council member Dave McAtlin was unavailable for comment Tuesday.

" So the last guy let people go, did he have a law degree? Maybe you should join the bandwagon and want people with a law degree on the bench?
And just another point, the answer to letting a few guilty go is to deny fair and impartial trials like we do now?
Hey how about we just get a person on the bench like the on who sits on the JoP bench? A LAWYER who is FAIR and IMPARTIAL? is that too hard? I have not heard anyone complain about her. It's ONE court that is the problem. ONE! Does she let guilty people go for no reason? Not that I have heard. Does she convict the innocent? Not if the evidence clears them.
How about someone like her? Just get rid of the guy ruining our reputation now.

Sorry for the caps but some people seem unable to grasp easy concepts. "

Funny how people will call into the pd and say they know someone is driving on a suspended dl just to get the person in trouble which only if they are pulled over on a traffic stop would the officer find out, Then since new laws came into effect where if your driving a vehicle on a suspended dl that veh gets towed, impounded no matter who owns the vehicle. Now people call and complain how thier vehicle got impounded cuz their friend got arrested.
They complain if we do something or don't. "

And yes the actions of aome of the visitors ae lawless especially on the big weekends and if you check all the law branches ticket and arrest people not just havasu police . Also I HAVE sat in court and watched what went on and have seen the Magistrate clear folks but when the breath test show higer then leagle what is a judge to find. This thing about comming back to court on a ticket maybe it is cheaper for people to pay the fine then loose money to come here. The last magistrat let people go when all evidence showed otherwise. he also let people go driving with no insurance and stated twice that I can remember that if they could not afford insurance they could not afford the fine. Is that what you wan't to happen again? "

I want, and I think many people want, those who are innocent to not be arrested in the first place where there is no chance of a fair hearing here.
The sooner the lake havasu city court is cleaned out the sooner we get our law abiding tourists back.
Good luck to those running who want to get Clyde out. It is the single most important step to getting our summer crowds back.
It amazes me that some knuckleheads think that summer crowds mean lawlessness. It shows the same dunderheaded thinking that allowed a person like Clyde into a city office in the first place then tickets go up 300% and tourism goes down 300% "

" Yep rat I think your right, of course all those dui arrests were incorrect and the limit blew on pbt's or even bac were false they were not that drunk oh gee how silly of the officers to try and remove what they thought was a drunk driver from the road. And the people that officers rolled up on fighting on the ground with each other giving each other black eyes, cuts and broken noses ect. were just playing my bad no need to arrest them Silly me I was seeing things when I worked in dispatch and saw people in holding cells get disorderly with each other and fight why should they get additional charges?
It's all a bunch of trumped up charges just to put money in Clyde's pocket lol "

" Ok Look oreally So you want the city to let folkes trash our town and the people living here put up with it so the few business in town can profit and the tax money made goes to cleanup and repair.Doen't pencil out for the average citizen but I guess the business can go on paying minuim wage and have money for big cars etc. This is not New Orleans we don't have the same action as they do. nor amount of people to clean up. But they still arrest people for drunkeness and nudity and diordely conduct. "

They are all innocent! They spend money in our town and need to be let go to do whatever they want without consequences. Then the one or two whiners and haters on this forum would find something else to complain about-at least for a little while. lol "

    o'really wrote on Feb 10, 2010 9:05 AM:

" NB, the simple answer to you question is those that are caught should be given a fair impartial hearing and if guilty, sentenced and or fined.
That CANNOT happen here. The magistrate is in violation of Cannon 2b. Read it, learn it. He was a supervisor of a department he now sits in judgement over. That cannot, in the least, appear impartial. He has been censured for this and still the council reappointed him.
The problem is that among those you have "seen" ACCUSED " of a crime are some who did nothing but were there to fill the coffers. Those you do not see are the once given citations for doing nothing wrong.
You have a typical prosecutors mindset that seems to believe that the act of accusation makes you guilty and even being found not guilty means they got away with it. I dont make that up, a prosecutor here once told me that when I questioned them about something I saw in court.-not Clydes court, nobody is found not guilty in clydes court.
As far visitors trashing our town. The city of New Orleans is trashed every year at Mardi Gras and they complain about visitors all the way to the bank. "

" No o'really that is not how I feel. I pay taxes too just like you and everyone else. Yes I am a civil servent, Yes I believe those who do wrong should be cited, even if I were to be drinking and driving, selling dope or shop lifting I should be cited/arested ect just like anyone else. I also feel that other towns, states have whiners just like we do, it's just not placed in ink for the world to see. So what would you like the courts to do with all the dui's, disorderly conducts, underage drinkers, ect they end up with? Would you like a phone call to have them all released into your custody? I used to work for LHCPD I have seen the jail facility full for holiday weekends because people were caught driving drunk, fighting and being disorderly, driving on suspended dl which by the way is one of the number 1 things tax payers complain about with L.E. that others are not caught driving around on suspended dl's. So give us your answer what should be done with the ones that disrupt our town? "

LHCPD has an agreement with BLM to patrol and enforce the laws in the channel. May want to write to BLM and inquire just what that agreement is all about. Just a thought. I agree we do need more boat ramps in our community and yes the boaters do spend money here. Most of us here are tired of those visitors that trash our town with beer cans and other litter, drive thru town dui and cause disturbances with eachother or locals that may also be out enjoying a holiday weekend. Those visitors we don't need here, the ones that spend most of the weekend in jail because they were speeding thru town caught driving on suspended dl or caught driving drunk. If they were to allow over night mooring we would see an increase in violance, theft off of water crafts, underage drinking and even worse drunk people swimming in the channel and drowning. Think about it how would you feel if your teen age child or grandchild was out on a boat mooring overnight was introduced to drugs or beer ect and ended up drowned? Our city needs to be able to prevent things like that from happening. If they didn't do anything to prevent stuff like that there would be attempted law suits which is the last thing we need here. "

NB, It seems that you, as a taxpayer paid civil servant, is that we taxpayer serfs should just shut up and allow you in the civil servant ruling class to do as you please even it is against the law. I guess what you imply is that we are all created equal but civil servants are more equal than us taxpayers?

How about the LHCPD just write tickets to wrongdoers only and the court has someone who do the job impartially without the appearance of being in conflict. Lets get someone who has a law degree and does not see his job as one to make a profit?

Isnt that a better solution then telling people they should just shut up and pay up and stop complaining about tickets they did not earn? "

Von Zipper wrote on Feb 8, 2010 12:08 AM:

" Advice for future city leaders:

    1. Our elected officials need to cater to and encourage tourism and boaters. Tourism, boaters, and Californians, are a major revenue source for LHC. The city and it's businesses are currently hurting financially. Look at all the failed businesses, manufacturing, unemployment, foreclosures, rental vacancies, etc. Bring them back!

    2. Get rid of Judge Profit. Justice is served when an unbiased judge makes fair decisions. Not decisions based on profit or simply to support his good old boys and friends in blue. This is a big problem when there is a well known reputation and countless editorials of Judge Profit!

    3. Don't make bonehead decisions, like raising the city bed tax or any other tax targeting tourists. That attempt to rape the tourists would have resulted in a negative impact to businesses in LHC. Encourage tourism and generate revenue without making them feel they are being gouged!

    4. Reform the LHC Police Dept. A police dept. should not have a reputation of generating revenue for the city through their citations. Their motto should be Protect, Safety & Service. Our police officers are writing tickets knowing that Judge Profit will back them up. That is morally and ethically wrong. We want officers who treat the citizens and tourists with respect and fairness. We also want them to take care of business when justified, and use common sense without being pressured to write citations to fill a qouta, generate revenue, or support stupid laws.
PS: I do support the LHCPD, and pray that they stay safe!

    5. Develop and/or encourage the building of first class marinas. There are not enough boat ramps, facilities, and slips for the boaters. Boaters come to this town and buy groceries, gas, supplies, etc. They rent hotels, condos, RV trailers, and rent from rental agencies, etc. Boaters rent storage places, leave their boats here for repair, and spend a lot of money paying taxes, supporting the city, supporting the businesses, stimulating the economy, and keeping LHC citizens employed.

    6. Open the channel and allow overnight mooring on the shores. How can LHCPD write citations below the 450 foot level anyways? All news articles state that BLM has sole jurisdiction below 450 feet. I believe LHCPD does not have jurisdiction and are citing an invalid city ordinace. A boater will not win that BS ticket in Judge Profit's court. The city will be facing a class action lawsuit and proved wrong by an appelate court in the near future. Secondly, why is that a costly $250 ticket, other than to rape the boaters and generate revenue. What is the harm or legitimate safety issue? The residents and visitors of The Isles condos can moor overnight. There are no crime waves, accidents, incidents, injuries, or fights occurring there. The boats are moored overnight when people are asleep. Big deal! Free up the launch ramps, lessen the traffic on the bridge and roadways, and make it convenient for the boaters. The boaters will come back and spend more money to stimulate the economy.

I'm done for now, but I'll be back! "

" Desertrat you are so right. If these so called visitors that are staying away because of the justice system then we don't need them here causing trouble. Maybe our whiney ones can go to california and party with the ones that won't come back. when I see a notary stamped letters from ANY visitor stating the only reason they are staying away is because of Clyde I'll believe it. Of course the economey could not have any part in why people don't travel much these days.
People loosing their homes or in a modification trial period such as myself trying to save my home of 20 yrs couldn't have anything what so ever to do with people traveling less. I am on a very strict budget paying on 2 home loans trying to keep my house, I don't travel I can't afford it. Show me letters from those so called victims. "

    " o'really,

The biggest issue is you have seven different police type organizations with some type of jurisdiction over the Lake Havasu area. The law enforcement thing has just exploded, you went from having a couple sheriff's patrolling the whole area to this unsustainable monstrosity, absolutely draining everyone's budget. There's just not enough for them to do, so every one of them is trying to show they're relevant, one way to do that is generate revenue. It's really basic economics, you have an over supply of law enforcement agencies, and none of them wants to say, we could be replaced by one of the others. Not just here, it's happening all over, in the news a red light ticket in LA will now cost you over $500 and they're going to increase the number of traffic cameras five fold, there's just way too many people asking for a public check, it's not sustainable. Quote of the day from Winston Churchill "We contend that for a nation to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle." "

Maybe because of all the garbage spewed here by folks that have been sited or know someone who has and the fact they can't afford it they stay closer to home. "

" The problem is that many or our former tourists are spending time in our court accussed of crimes they did not do but have zero chance at a fair hearing or an impartial magistrate.
We need a council that will not support a censured man who is the single most responsible person for the downturn in tourism here that started well before economy slumped.
It is nice to see that Drat has given up trying to argue the facts because he got skunked everytime doing it.
Once again the people want Justice in court-not a free pass. The people want someone who has not been censured and who can be or at least appear impartial because currently we do not have that.
I defy Drat or NB to find any news articles, point to radio broadcasts, or websites postings that point to anything else other than our lack of justice as reason former visitors are not coming back.
It is not because the senior center is open or closed, its not because the channel is owned by the city or not, its not because our sewer is finished or not.All of these though are affected by our lack of visitors. Our first priority as a city is to listen to the customers that pay our bills through taxes and jobs.
They are not complaining about BHC or Parker's cops, courts or council.
Potential candidates. This will be an issue in this election. You will be asked questions about this in debates. Prepare the answers that the people demand. "

I do not think the senior center open or closed brings a dime to me. I think running off tourist causes many businesses to close putting people out of work, closing the senior center will just mean that the golden arches sells more ice cream as more seniors will hang out there. All the few whiners care about is who is setting their bails and dictating their fines. Most people care about other things in the commuity. Again, it speaks volumes that your focus is the criminal justice system when the majority of our citizens and visitors do not end up in court. Most care about the EV, the lake, the schools, etc. Sad reflection on the few haters. "

I do have a problem when this council RE-appoints a man to the bench who was censured by the state already and stated before them that his was the most profitable court and who has been widely held responsible by our guests as the reason they will not return. Plus there are more very qualified people who want the job!
That is my problem. Desertmouse is right. This election will be about getting our tourist back and dumping the flawed policy's and policy makers who put profiteer on the bench. "

You display it by voting against accessible services for our visitors and by supporting the most ill qualified person appointed to the bench in Mohave County. You did so after he was censured and after he made it clear his view of the job was profit.
As we spoke about, if you do not start to address this issue you will have no hope of getting my vote. I do not care if the senior center is open or not, I do care if we have a person we can be proud of on the bench. "
