Eight residents have already pulled packets for City Council but current city councilman Brian Wedemeyer says he is not pulling one.
“My son’s going to be 4 soon and it’s time to get him ready for T-ball practice, Wedemeyer said. “My daughters are going to be quickly approaching their teenage years, and I know they’re going to have needs as well and I would like to be around more for them.”
Wedemeyer said he is looking forward work ahead and finishing out his term.
“I still have several months left and there’s still work to be done,” he said. “I’m looking forward to seeing what the committee from the (council) retreat comes up with to bring jobs to the community. There are also several other things, like the budget, that I’m looking forward to getting to work on.”
Wedemeyer is currently the youngest council member and said he was encouraged to see a variety of names already pulling packets.
“That’s a good sign for sure. … Last time, the voters certainly didn’t have a lot of choices in terms of variety so it’s nice to see a lot of names already,” he said. “I think it’s always good when you have a governing body, like a City Council, represent the entire community. I did see there are some younger people that are considering a run for one of those seats but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are the best candidates. I believe voters will have a great opportunity to select the right candidates and they should.”
Nyberg said there were too many items that were important to the city for her to not submit for reelection.
“I’m interested in keeping sewer rates down, keeping the senior center open and funding the meals on wheels program, among other things,” she said. “I also am concerned with our daily objective of bringing people into the town. There are so many projects that are going to help these things and we’re right in the middle of some of those things and I want to see them through to the end or at least see them get started.”
Prospective candidates are required to obtain no fewer than 748 signatures and no more than 1,495 signatures and other required documentation for their names to appear on the ballot. Residents may not file petitions earlier than April 26 or later than May 26.
Council member Dave McAtlin was unavailable for comment Tuesday.
