March 9, 1944 – Nov. 17, 2009

Donald C. Kurth, of Lake Havasu City, passed away peacefully in his home Nov. 17. He was born in Saint Paul, Minn., March 9, 1944, to George and Ruby Kurth.

Don began life with a set of challenges. He was a survivor of the 1940s polio epidemic, having been diagnosed shortly after his first birthday. Despite these early challenges, perseverance was strong in Don. He lived a rich childhood, spending summers at his family cabin, swimming and boating. Don had a passion for cars. He went on to Central High school and University of Minnesota.

He met his wife, Sandie, of 43 years, in June 1966. Together they raised three sons, passing on the very traditions and values that had helped shape Don. He succeeded in providing a good life for his family in Minnesota. At this time, Don began his career in banking, eventually settling at Wells Fargo.

However, the desert had always appealed to Don. A visit to Lake Havasu City during a family vacation many years ago would set a future goal in motion, and lead to the eventual decision to make Havasu his home. With his easy going nature, disarming style and wit he won over many, making him a good fit in his newly adopted community. This change suited him; he felt that he belonged. He continued at Wells Fargo and took pride in his business, valuing his friends and relationships. Don was an active and proud member of the Rotary Club of Lake Havasu City.

Later in life, he focused on his love of travel, taking memorable cruises with his wife and friends. He enjoyed exploring the lake and desert. While Don was a remarkable husband and father, it was his role as grandfather where he truly shined. Don had a special bond with his grandchildren. He loved each of them dearly and this experience proved a very rewarding time in his life.

Don is survived by his wife, Sandie; sons, Brian (Lisa), Randy (Dorset), and Michael (Rachel) Kurth; grandchildren, Aiden, Julia, Chasen, Daniel, Liam, Matthew and Willem; and brother, Dennis. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ruby Kurth.

A life celebration will take place 4 p.m. Tuesday at Lietz-Fraze Chapel. Jerry Aldridge, president of the Rotary Club, will offer words of comfort and inspiration.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Don Kurth’s memory can be made to the Lake Havasu Rotary Club wheelchair program, PO Box 1168, Lake Havasu City, AZ 86405.

Thoughts and condolences may be submitted to the family at www.lietz-frazefuneralhome.com.

Arrangements were placed under the care of Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home & Crematory.
